ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTUREThe following diagram was developed to describe the organisation and management structure of AAREA). Some structures within the organisation are yet to be developed ( eg. the secretariat: CEO etc) whilst others are in the early stages of development (eg. Facilitators of Area Networks). Lines within the diagram represent lines of communication.
Roles and ResponsibilitiesBoard of Members
Responsible for the overall management of the association. The committee meets twice per monthly. Office bearers are elected biennially at the Annual General Meeting. The board works within the framework provided by the AAREA Constitution, Associations Incorporation Act -1984 and Future Directions (AAREA Strategic Plan – under review).
Subcommittees
The Board of Members annually seeks (at the Annual General Meeting) expressions of interest from full members to participate in the various committees. Subcommittees meet at their own discretion.
State Committees
Each State and Territory has a committee whose prime role is to develop the Professional Development Program for the State each year.

Education
Responsible for the development and maintenance of respiratoryasthma education Training Prgrams. Facilitate the Asthma Educators Basic Training Course. In 2006 the association is looking to contract an Education and Training Officer to expand the training program.

Credentialing
Responsible for the development and maintenance of asthma/respiratory educator standards (inc. research) and services. Facilitate the National Credentialing Program.

AccreditationResponsible for the development and maintenance of asthma/respiratory education program standards . The Program Accreditation Program is under development.

Strategic Planning
Responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Strategic Plan. The committee conduct an annual TQM audit to measure the association’s performance.
Core membership: Chair (of SP Sub-committee) and President
Public Relations CommitteeResponsible for the collation and distribution of the AAREA Newsletter and promotion of the organisation.
Core membership: Publicity Officer and ordinary member of the executive committee
Facilitators of Area NetworksResponsible for the maintenance of an asthma/respiratory educator network within the individual Area Health Service Regions.
FANs are full members of the association and are appointed annually by the Board of Membres.
Secretariat
Official documents, minutes, correspondence, mailing lists etc. are housed with the incumbent secretary. AAREA contracts secretariat hours from Wollongong Hospital, Department of Respiratory Medicine 3 days per week.
Administrative needs of the association are also met voluntarily by committee members and are co-ordinated by the Board of Members. In 2006 AAREA are working to contract a CEO and Educations and Training Officer
Public OfficerThe public officer is responsible for notifying the NSW Department of Fair Trading of any changes in the association and its financial position eg. executive committee membership, constitution, name. The public officer is also responsible for ensuring that the Annual Statement (to the Department ) has been lodged on time.
The public officer is appointed by the executive committee.
